This might be interesting to look at: nest over xmpp. Sorry, it’s in french, but a pijul backend for this xmpp-backed nest-like could be cool. It’s also probably worthwhile checking if the nest can be federated with that system.
As a side remark, I was recently investigated the ActivityPub federation protocol, to see if it can be used by the nest.
or using ipfs as storage.
What was the result of that investigation?

In case anyone is/will be working on this: Are you aware of https://sourcehut.org/? It is a git/hg forge built around mailing lists and using the integrated email workflow features (see also https://drewdevault.com/2018/07/23/Git-is-already-distributed.html).
I don’t know any details, but if pijul could render patches to and import them from emails, I would think, a pijul integration should probably not be too difficult.
I personally would love to see something happen between sourcehut and pijul, but I suspect there might be more work than one might expect to make the user experience great.
